Barley Mow Park
Barley Mow Park is a former bowling green, and is now Hendon's only green space. It is now used for tennis courts, a multi-use games area, and also a public green space and community growing area, with 14 large raised beds each with a different focus, including herbs, potatoes, onions, fungi and more.
We are also encouraging wildlife by planting a number of new mini wildflower meadows, and allowing the grass to grow tall naturally on the perimeters of the bowling greens, creating controlled and tidy-looking strips of wilderness which benefit a range of pollinators and invertebrates and provide excellent habitat and food sources for other animals too. We also have some beds for flowers, one that has strawberries and rhubarb, and there are some fruit bushes in the park too for blackcurrant, gooseberry and raspberry. One of the larger beds is themed 'Grow Your Own Cuppa' filled with mints, chamomile, and lemon balm.
Urban Garden
The Urban Garden is a plot in the Corporation Road Allotments which has been transformed into an interactive and educational outdoor classroom and events space. It has a large amount of decking, a sensory garden filled with all sorts of strong-smelling plants like mints, lavender, herbs, a medicinal plants and wildflower section, polytunnel and an interactive play-zone with mud kitchen. We regularly host school groups here and the space is also available to hire for other events, and in the past we've used it to host yoga classes and sound baths.
Orchard @ P86
The Orchard is the newest site within the Hendon Eco project and is also within the same allotments site as the Urban Garden. The area was previously dead space used for allotment waste and now it has been transformed into a peaceful and functional orchard with two types of eating apple, bramleys, cherry, pear and apricot. The new fruit trees are taking very well and look like they'll produce lots of fruit already this year. In here, there are raised beds and planters with red/black/whitecurrants, raspberries, blueberries, rhubarb and strawberries. There are various herbs: oregano, coriander, sage and horseradish. The vision for the Orchard is to have a welcoming and peaceful oasis for people to visit and can also collect fruit for themselves.
Bumblebee Highway
The Bumblebee Highway is not technically a site, but is the link between the pollinator-friendly areas of Barley Mow Park and the allotment sites on Corporation Road. The planters and troughs along the paths of Villette Road have been filled with colourful flowers and plants to attract pollinators and allow them to move between the top and bottom of Villette Road while being able to stop at a lot of plants along the way.
