Tour Series 2021 comes to Sunderland - Tuesday 10th August 2021
The 2021 Tour Series calendar revealing three new host venues for this August's events has today (24 June) been announced.
Guisborough, Sunderland and Castle Douglas will each host men's and women's races in a compact week-long Tour Series, with events taking place on Sunday 8, Tuesday 10, and Thursday 12 August, subject to final permissions. Highlights of all three rounds will again be broadcast on ITV4.
This year will be the first time that the Tour Series has taken place outside of its traditional May date, with organisers SweetSpot working in collaboration with British Cycling, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Sunderland City Council and Dumfries & Galloway Council to put the events on in a new August calendar slot for 2021.
The Tour Series is a fun, fast and free cycling event that takes place in town and city centres across the UK.
Launched in 2009, the series sees Britain's best male and female riders compete against each other in a unique, team-based format as part of a full day of sporting and community-focused activities.
British sporting heroes Laura Kenny, Dani Rowe, Joanna Rowsell, Ed Clancy, Elinor Barker and Katie Archibald have all competed in the series during its 10-year history, during which time nearly two million fans have watched a round.

We've got a fun filled afternoon of free activities in and around Mowbray Park including circus skills workshops, stunt cycling displays, children's shows and a walkabout magician. Find out what's happening when and where below:

1. What is the Tour Series?
The Tour Series is a fun, fast and free spectator cycling event that returns for its 12th edition this August. 2. When is the Tour Series taking place in Sunderland?
The Tour Series races will take place on Tuesday 10 August 2021. The Women's race will be between 5:30pm and 6:20pm and the Men's race between 7pm and 8:15pm.
3. Where is the Tour Series taking place?
The races will take place on a perimeter circuit of Mowbray Park in Sunderland city centre on Burdon Road, Park Road, Toward Road and Borough Road.
4. Will there be anything to do before the races take place?
Yes, visitors can enjoy the build-up to the races by visiting Mowbray Park from 12pm where they can enjoy a range of free family activities such as music performances, stunt bike demonstrations, children's shows and characters, face painting and much more.
5. Is Mowbray Park suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs?
Yes. Mowbray Park is fully accessible for pushchairs and wheelchair users.
6. Will there be toilets and baby changing facilities available at the event?
Yes. Portable toilets including accessible units and baby changing facilities will be available in Mowbray Park, on Burdon Road near to the Civic Centre steps, and in Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. There are public toilets throughout the city centre.
7. Will there be food and drink at the event?
Yes. There will be food and drinks available in the park, including a bar area. There is also a huge range of food and drink options in the city centre for visitors to enjoy before they visit the site.
8. Can I bring my own food and drink into the park?
Yes. Soft drinks and food can be brought into the park. Only alcohol purchased at the bar in the park during the event can be consumed. We ask visitors to consider the wildlife within the park and to reduce the number of disposable plastics they bring in. Please always use our waste and recycling units that will be located throughout the park and please do not litter.
9. Will Mowbray Park be open as usual?
Yes. All areas of the park will be open for non-event visitors, although you might find that the park is busier than usual. The family activities will all be in the northern area of the park nearest to the Museum and Winter Gardens,
10. Can I bring my bike to the event?
Yes, there will be ample secure cycle parking in Mowbray Park at the terrace area.
11. Can I bring my dog to the event?
Yes. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead. Please consider that there may be crowds and noise at this event.
12. Will Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens be open during the Tour Series?
Yes. Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens will operate normal open/close times throughout the event. Please visit www.sunderlandculture.org.uk for details.
The Museum Shop will be open until 9pm.

14. What is the easiest way to travel to the Tour Series?
Sunderland city centre is easily reached by public transport and has several car parks.
Sunderland Train Station is a National Rail and Tyne and Wear Metro Station and is a 5-minute walk to the event.
Park Lane Bus Interchange and Tyne and Wear Metro Station is an approximate 10-minute walk to the event

15. Where can I park in the city centre?
There are several car parks in the city centre, all within walking distance of the event. Popular car parks include:

Civic Centre Car Park SR2 7DN - Access from Cowan Terrace only. Burdon Road access will be closed for the duration of the event.

16. Is there any free parking near to the event?
Parking is free in Sunderland city centre after 3pm from Monday to Friday all year, in Sunderland City Council car parks. Before 3pm charges for parking will apply.
17. I have a Blue Badge, where can I park?

19. Will there be road closures?
Yes. On Tuesday 10 August Burdon Road will be closed between 7am and 11pm, Park Road and Toward Road between 2pm and 9pm, and Borough Road between 3pm and 9pm approximately. Diversions will be in place and advanced signage will be in place across the route.
20. Will buses be affected by the road closures?
Yes. Buses in the city centre will unfortunately be affected by the road closures. Bust stops will be temporarily installed on St Mary's Way both east and west bound for those services that are affected.
