Public Lecture: 'How railways created the original Northern Powerhouse'

Award winning writer and broadcaster,Christian Wolmar will discuss how railways drove the original Northern Powerhouse for Britain's economy

There is much talk today of a Northern Powerhouse. But it seems to have been forgotten that the North was the original powerhouse for the whole British economy. And it was the railways that were the crucial catalyst in its development.

The North was the cradle for the railways with pioneering lines such as the Stockton & Darlington in 1825 and five years later, the Liverpool & Manchester. These railways were responsible for the development and spread of the world's first capitalist economy and it was investment was money from the industrialists of the region which supported the spread of the railways across the nation.

In this lecture, Christian Wolmar will relate the story behind the original Northern Powerhouse.

This is the first University of Sunderland public lecture for 2022.
